Who requests the training?

State SRTS Coordinators, schools, school districts, city or county governments, coalitions and public service groups are all potential sponsors. Agencies may partner to fund and coordinate the training.

Training cost

The course costs $5,000, with the National Center for Safe Routes to School covering much of the administrative costs. Under certain circumstances, a reduced rate is available when two or three courses are scheduled in the same week.

Overview of the role of the local coordinator

Maximizing the benefits of the training begins with the preparation work of the local coordinator at the requesting agency. The National Center for Safe Routes to School will work with the local coordinator and provide guidance on how to hold a successful training. The local coordinator will:

  1. Select the course location. This includes a classroom for the training that accommodates Power Point presentation and group exercises.
  2. Invite and secure commitment from participants. The course accommodates 20–40 participants. Commonly invited participants include: SRTS task force members (if there's already a group in place), school administrators and transportation staff, parents, transportation engineers, city or town planners, local government officials, law enforcement officers, public health professionals and bicycle/pedestrian coordinators as well as others who have an interest in safety, obesity prevention, physical activity promotion, transportation, bicycling, walking, children's health or the school neighborhood.
  3. Provide refreshments and lunches for participants. Lunch on-site is a necessary part of the course and keeps the day running smoothly and on-schedule.
  4. Provide equipment and supplies including: LCD projector, extension cords, easel paper, nametags, markers and an attendance list.
  5. Supply copies of handouts. Before the training, NCSRTS will provide electronic files of participant handouts from which the local coordinator will make photocopies.
  6. Keep momentum going after the training. May include sending the sample action plans created in the closing session and participant contact information to all participants.

Each of these responsibilities will be described in more detail when a course is requested.

The National Center for Safe Routes to School will provide:

  1. Pre-training technical assistance to the local coordinator to guide successful preparation.
  2. Customizable marketing material.
  3. Customized course agenda.
  4. Instructor travel arrangements.
  5. Training delivery by two instructors who bring "on the ground" experience with local SRTS program planning and implementation
  6. Overview PowerPoint presentation for each participant to use
  7. Electronic files of handouts for the local coordinator to print for participants
